According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, a group of four friends gave Blumstein $60 each for his entry $10,000 entry fee. In the event of Blumstein winning money, the friends would be set to walk away with that share of the winnings. The investment paid off in the form of a Blumstein championship.
For the group of friends, they ended up turning that $60 into just over $40,000 each before taxes. That’s some return on an investment.
Via ESPN:
Gerolamo, Aldo Boscia, John Scuteri and Nick Muldrow gave Blumstein $60 each toward his $10,000 entry fee and will each come away with $40,750 before taxes.
It’s commonplace for poker players to have friends and family fund their entry fees to big tournaments in return for a piece of the winnings, but Blumstein’s investors came in for smaller amounts than is typical. It also means that the money for them tends to be more life changing.
And that offer wasn’t limited to Blumstein’s friends. The eventual WSOP champion actually solicited shares of his winnings for entry-fee contributions back in June.
We all missed our chance.
